Job Description
The Nationwide Senior Project Manager (Senior PM) is a senior operational leader responsible for driving excellence in project delivery across Chronicle Heritage's U.S. portfolio. This role ensures consistency, financial discipline, quality control, and client satisfaction across regions while personally leading select, high-visibility or complex projects.
Serving as both a player and coach, the Senior PM partners closely with Regional Vice Presidents, Principal Investigators (PIs), Field Directors (FDs), Lab and Permitting personnel, Operations Leadership, Quality and Compliance, and Finance. The role strengthens enterprise-wide project management standards, mentors Project Managers, audits performance, and drives continuous improvement in tools, workflows, and financial controls.
This position reports to the Vice President of Operations (or equivalent executive leader) and may be based in any U.S. office or remote location, with travel required as needed.
Core Responsibilities

Core Responsibilities
1. Enterprise Project Delivery Leadership
- Personally lead complex, high-risk, or high-visibility projects nationwide, ensuring on-time, on-budget, and compliant delivery.
- Serve as escalation point for material project risks, including budget erosion, schedule delays, staffing gaps, subcontractor performance, regulatory exposure, and client disputes.
- Drive corrective action plans in partnership with regional leadership.
- Ensure consistent application of project controls, financial discipline, and risk management standards across regions.
2. Financial Stewardship & Risk Management
- Oversee project financial health across assigned portfolio, including:
- Budget adherence
- Forecast accuracy
- Work-in-progress (WIP) management
- Accounts receivable performance
- Change order discipline
- Audit large or at-risk projects for compliance with contractual terms, scope alignment, and internal financial controls.
- Identify systemic margin leakage trends and recommend structural improvements.
- Ensure change orders are documented, approved, and executed prior to scope expansion.
3. Project Management Standards & Practice Leadership
- Lead and mentor Project Managers nationwide through coaching, structured feedback, and training.
- Facilitate Project Manager Working Groups to share best practices and drive consistency.
- Standardize and improve:
- Teamwork project templates
- Budget calculators and estimating tools
- Kickoff protocols
- Risk registers
- Project information sheets
- Closeout processes
- Promote disciplined use of Teamwork and Sage for lifecycle management from initiation through closeout.
- Drive formal kickoff requirements for projects exceeding defined scope, cost, or complexity thresholds.
4. Proposal Development & Sales-to-Operations Alignment
- Support high-impact pursuits by advising on execution strategy, resourcing models, schedule realism, and budget assumptions.
- Partner with Sales, Technical Leads, and Regional Leadership to:
- Translate proposal scope into executable work plans
- Validate assumptions and risk exposure
- Ensure operational readiness before project launch
- Improve estimating accuracy through standardized cost models and historical performance data.
5. Client & Stakeholder Leadership
- Maintain executive-level relationships on select strategic accounts.
- Support PMs in navigating complex or escalated client situations.
- Ensure client communications are documented, retained in approved repositories, and evaluated for scope/budget impact.
- Reinforce proactive expectation management and regulatory coordination in partnership with the Quality and Compliance Division.
6. Quality, Compliance & Operational Auditing
- Conduct structured audits of active projects for:
- SOP compliance
- Financial accuracy
- Schedule integrity
- Documentation completeness
- Subcontractor controls
- Provide direct, constructive feedback and track corrective actions to closure.
- Ensure deliverables meet formatting, completeness, contractual, and quality expectations prior to submission.
7. Field Readiness & Safety Oversight
- Ensure projects nationwide demonstrate readiness prior to mobilization, including:
- Confirmed permits and rights-of-entry
- Staffing alignment
- Logistics coordination
- Site-specific safety documentation
- Escalate safety or compliance risks immediately to appropriate leadership.
8. Continuous Improvement & Organizational Impact
- Identify recurring delivery challenges and propose structural solutions.
- Advance data-driven project management maturity across the organization.
- Support development of dashboards and executive reporting tied to delivery performance.
- Contribute to strategic initiatives that improve margin, reduce risk, and enhance scalability.

Required Qualifications
- Advanced degree in archaeology, anthropology, environmental or cultural resource management, construction management, or closely related field, or equivalent professional experience.
- 8+ years of progressive project management experience in cultural resource management, environmental consulting, engineering, or comparable professional services.
- 3+ years in a senior, lead, or practice oversight capacity with demonstrated mentorship responsibilities.
- Proven ability to manage large, multi-stakeholder projects with strict budget and schedule constraints.
- Expert command of core PM disciplines: budgeting, forecasting, scope control, scheduling, risk management, change management, and quality control.
- Demonstrated experience auditing project performance and driving corrective action.
- Strong financial acumen and client-facing leadership capability.
- Working knowledge of relevant federal, state, tribal, and local regulatory frameworks.
- Ability to travel as needed.
Preferred Qualifications
- PMP, PgMP, or equivalent professional certification.
- Experience operating across multiple regions or offices.
- Experience building or leading a PMO or standardized project management function.
- Proficiency with Teamwork, Sage Intacct, or similar integrated PM and financial systems.
- Experience managing subcontractors and multidisciplinary teams.
Physical & Work Environment Requirements
- Occasional travel to project sites and offices nationwide.
- Field visits may involve walking uneven terrain and exposure to outdoor conditions.
- Frequent computer-based work in an office or remote environment.
